'Krachtschaak' is a Dutch word which means 'Powerchess'

Krachtschaak Chess

Krachtschaak chess (or 'Power chess') is a tremendously exciting chess variant, created during blitz games at various tournaments. Although chess is a beautiful game, sometimes we desire for some variety. This variant brings a treasure of spectacular fights, unique positions, and normally impossible moves. Even boring endgames turn into breathtaking battles, full of constant promotional threats.

Grab your swindle toolbox and confuse your opponents with powers they've forgotten. See you at the (Krachtschaak)chessboard!

Take Snijders and William Roolvink.

'The threat is stronger than the execution. ''

Aron Nimzowitsch

What he says about this is absolutely right. In Krachtschaak Chess it often happens that the weapon is the threat of your power, instead of actually using the power. On average there are only 2 Krachtschaak Chess/Power moves in a game, but actually it has much more impact on the game.

Frequently asked questions

How did you come up with this genius idea?

We, William Roolvink and Take Snijders, play a lot of chess (at a fairly strong level, ratings above 2000 in classical and online 2500+), and we play a lot of blitz and after a while you start using your creativity and then you come up with this. We don't know EXACTLY what date the game was invented either, but it will have been around Nov./Dec. 2023.

Is there an official Krachtschaak Chess Rating?

Yes, of course! In all official Krachtschaak Chess tournaments you get a special rating. There is already an official Rapid and Blitz rating but there will also be a Classic rating and maybe even a bullet rating. The game is played with a K-Factor 40. Your starting rating is your Krachtschaak Chess rating, with the time control that most resembles it, but if there are multiple options it is rounded up. So if you have a blitz Krachtschaak Chess rating and no rapid rating yet, your starting rating for rapid is your blitz rating. If you have a blitz and classic power chess rating but no rapid yet, the longest time control, classic, is used as your starting rapid rating. But, if you do not have a Power Chess rating yet, your normal KNSB (or if you do not have that, Fide rating) is used as your starting rating.

Isn't Krachtschaak Chess too difficult?

It must be admitted that this chess variant can be extra difficult for beginners. But of course it remains quite difficult in the beginning to remember all the powers of the pieces, but after a lot of playing you get used to it. Once you have that Krachtschaak chess mindset on, a world opens up for you and it is certainly not too difficult. Perhaps it can help (in the beginning) to play with a longer time control or to notate your games so the remembering is easier.

Can I organise a Krachtschaak Chess Tournament myself?

Yes, that is possible, but there must be at least one official Krachtschaak chess arbiter present in your Krachtschaak chess tournament, you must report your tournament to us well in advance and all scores and results must be passed on to us correctly. Then you ask yourself: How do I become an official Krachtschaak chess arbiter? Then you must contact us. So that we can arrange for you to take an exam with an official Krachtschaak chess arbiter who will test you on how well you know the rules with the applications.

Is there a Krachtschaak Chess engine?

Actually, we don't want a Krachtschaak Chess Engine. That would spoil the fun of the game. Power Chess takes you back hundreds of years to a time when there were no computers and you could decide by your own analysis what the best moves were, and why. What a good opening is, which endgames were won, whether someone played a good game, or whether a tactic really worked.

Is there a Krachtschaak Chess App where I can play online games on?

Unfortunately, that is not there yet. We're not so good programmers. Our only options are to make a Krachtschaak Chess app where you can play games, make analyses, save games, learn to program yourself (which we are currently doing with relatively little result) or hire a programmer who can make it, but that costs a lot of money that we do not have at all. Are you a programmer and would you like to program the Krachtschaak Chess app for a small price or for free? Thank you very much and send us an email via krachtschaak@gmail.com.

Is there a Youtube channel?

Yes there are 2 Youtube channels:

Dutch Version: Krachtschaak NL - YouTube

English Version: Krachtschaak Chess - YouTube

Is there an official Krachtschaak Chess App?

Yes, there is now a temporary official Krachtschaak Database with games. On the platform Lichess, on the account 'Krachtschaak': Krachtschaak : Activiteit • lichess.org There are around 70 games in the database. The language used in the database is Dutch. It is a temporary database, because the goal is of course to have a database in the Krachtschaak App that still needs to be programmed.

This is our temporary Krachtschaak chess database of around 70 games of Krachtschaak chess games (and a few puzzles):

Lichess account called 'Krachtschaak Chess'

Krachtschaak : Activiteit • lichess.org

You can also share studies here so that your Krachtschaak chess games are also added to the already quite large database of games that have been noted and are online (via the studies, with each Krachtschaak chess move a new chapter)

“Krachtschaak Chess has exceeded all my expectations and gives me new enthusiasm. The games she gives are truly art. I actually like the fact that there is no engine, it forces you to think with your own brain instead of learning all the opening engine lines by memorization.''

[Magnus Carlsen]

''I would really like to see a new piece, something like a Queen and Knight combined. ''

(Gukesh Dommaraju)

He is really happy with Krachtschaak Chess because there are lots of new pieces in Krachtschaak Chess, including a Knightqueen or Queenknight.

Our Future plans:

What are our future plans? Our goals are: to spread the enthusiasm for Krachtschaak chess, a Krachtschaak chess App where you can play Krachtschaak chess games online, save games, analyse them, do Krachtschaak chess puzzles. We initially planned to also create a Power Chess engine, but after further consideration it is much more fun without an engine. And with Krachtschaak Chess you can go back to a great era without computers. But that won't work without your help. Spreading this website and Power Chess (word of mouth advertising is also possible of course), and subscribing to our official Youtube channel helps a lot. And if you can donate, please do, and if you can program we will gladly employ you. If you want to help in something else, send us an email.
